PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program

Through our PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program, we offer a full-range of experiences in the following areas:

PGY-2 Critical Care Residency (Candidate Status) Program

The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at North Memorial Health is a new program that offers residents advanced training in various critical care settings. It is structured to develop the skills required to practice independently as part of the interdisciplinary critical care team, to precept critical care learners and to attain BCCCP certification upon program completion. The program has been designed to meet the published ASHP accreditation standards and is currently in Candite Status.

Required Learning Experiences (44 weeks)

  • Orientation (4 weeks) – Shortened to 1 week for residents who completed their PGY1 at North Memorial Health. Extra time will be added as an elective learning experience of the president’s choice
  • Medical-Surgical ICU (8 weeks)
  • Trauma-Neuro ICU (6 weeks)
  • Cardiovascular ICU (6 weeks)
  • Neonatal ICU (4 weeks) at Level III NICU at the Maple Grove Hospital
  • Emergency Medicine Day (4 weeks)
  • Emergency Medicine Evening (4 weeks
  • Infectious Diseases (4 weeks)
  • ICU Precepting (4 weeks)

Required Longitudinal Learning Experiences

  • ICU Weekend Staffing (6 months) 8–10-hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays every third weekend)
  • ED Weekend Staffing (6 months) 8–10-hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays every third weekend)
  • Practice Management (1 year)*
  • Resident Project (1 year)*

*Occurs concurrently with other scheduled learning experiences

Residents have a total of 7 project days per year. A minimum of 8-16 hours per month is expected to be dedicated to each of the year-long rotation-related activities, in addition to the project days.

Elective Learning Experiences (6-8 weeks)

  • Toxicology (4 weeks) – Based on availability, declaring interest early increases the chance of securing one of the limited rotation spots at the Minnesota Poison Control Center
  • Healthcare Analytics (4 weeks)
  • Cardiology (4 weeks)
  • Critical Care Nutrition (2 weeks)
  • Palliative Care (2 weeks)
  • Surgical Services (2 weeks)

Additional Resident Opportunities

  • Serve as preceptor to pharmacy students on rotation from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy
  • Serve as a preceptor to PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residents on their Critical Care rotation
  • Provide education to pharmacists and providers
  • Round in the intensive care unit with intensivist physician colleagues
  • Attend local and national pharmacy conferences
  • Participate in system committees

Program History & Accreditation

The PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at North – Robbinsdale Hospital originated in 2006 and is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Our exceptional graduates practice across the U.S. as respected clinicians and clinical specialists. North Memorial Health added the PGY-2 in Critical Care in 2024 and it is in candidate status through ASHP awaiting accreditation. Our residency program is continuously evaluated for improvement opportunities to guide our residents through a seamless transition into clinical practice. Up to three candidates each year are selected for our PGY-1 program and one candidate for our PGY-2 in Critical Care.

Pharmacy Services

North – Robbinsdale Hospital’s Department of Pharmacy Services utilizes a decentralized model to provide care in the inpatient setting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Department clinical services include, but are not limited to:

  • Antibiotic stewardship
  • Multi-disciplinary rounds
  • Parenteral nutrition management
  • Pharmacokinetic management of aminoglycosides and vancomycin
  • Renal dose adjustment
  • Therapeutic interchange
  • Transition of care consults
