An ostomy is an artificial opening created on the abdominal wall through which waste passes out from the bowel or urinary tract. The opening for colostomies comes from the colon and ileostomy comes from the ileum, or the last portion of the small intestine. Each of these surgeries creates a stoma, or opening, where a pouch is attached to collect waste. These procedures can be temporary or permanent, depending on your condition.
