Vascular Surgery
The Board-certified, fellowship trained vascular surgeons of Minneapolis Vascular Physicians are experts in both open surgical and minimally invasive procedures to repair arteries and veins. We're well known as a top trauma center for vascular injuries as well as a leader in endovascular therapy for aortic aneurysms and carotid stenosis.
Surgery Overview
We provide services in both a traditional operating room suite, as well as a specialized endovascular suite. The endovascular suite is a hybrid room that combines surgery and radiology. We can perform less invasive procedures by using intraoperative radiology to guide stent graft placement, as well as image and open up blood vessels during procedures. Our doctors are leaders in the field for both open and endovascular surgeries.

We repair AAA either with open surgery or by utilizing an endovascular stent graft. The endovascular stent graft placement is a minimally invasive procedure, and is done roughly 70% of the time for patients with AAA versus open surgery. Our vascular surgeons will determine which treatment is most appropriate for each patient.

Using open surgery, we are able to remove plaque build-up that causes blockage of blood flow in the carotid arteries (located on either side of your neck) or the femoral arteries (located in either groin area).

Our surgeons will place either a fistula or graft for dialysis access. A fistula is a dialysis access that uses your own natural blood vessels and is created by connecting an artery and a vein. This type of access is typically created between the wrist and the upper arm. A graft is a dialysis access that utilizes a synthetic tube that is surgically placed under the skin. One end of the graft is connected to an artery, and the other end is connected to a vein. This type of access is typically created in the forearm.

We re-route the plumbing in your arteries when there is a blockage by creating an alternative channel for blood flow, thereby “ bypassing” the blocked vessel. This is performed using a healthy section of the patient’s own vein or a synthetic graft material. A bypass can be performed on the arteries of the abdomen, neck, arms and legs.

Peripheral arterial disease may be treated utilizing endovascular procedures, such as balloon angioplasty, stenting and atherectomy—a roto-rooter like device removes plaque that is blocking the artery. Sometimes PAD treatments require both open and endovascular techniques to fix blockages.
