Maple Grove Hospital Expansion

Investing in the future of care

Maple Grove Hospital is expanding to meet the growing healthcare needs of the northwest metro and central Minnesota. This transformational expansion will strengthen access to care, expand critical services, and help ensure patients and families can receive more of the care they need close to home for generations to come.

As our community continues to grow and healthcare needs become more complex, Maple Grove Hospital must grow and evolve alongside it. The expansion reflects years of planning and a long-standing commitment to providing high-quality, people-first care to the region.

Strengthened by the Sanford Health partnership, this investment will help support future healthcare needs, improve access to care, and create a flexible, future-ready environment designed to serve patients and families well into the future.

Construction and operational updates

We are committed to providing advance notice whenever possible and minimizing disruption while continuing to deliver safe, high-quality care. We will continue to provide the latest information about project activities, construction progress, and any operational changes that may affect team members, patients, visitors or campus access.

Early site preparation activities begin Nov. 15

Beginning in mid-November, team members, patients and visitors may notice early site preparation activity around portions of the Maple Grove Hospital campus. This work is an important step in preparing the site for future phases of the hospital expansion. Most work during this phase will occur outside patient care areas, and operational impacts are expected to be limited.

Activities may include:

  • Contractor vehicles and equipment
  • Construction trailers and staging areas
  • Utility and infrastructure work
  • Temporary fencing and site preparation activity

Why we are expanding

Demand for healthcare services continues to grow across the northwest metro and central Minnesota.

Current trends include:

  • Emergency Department visits have grown significantly since the hospital opened and continue to increase each year.
  • Adult inpatient, emergency, and women’s and children’s services regularly experience capacity pressures.
  • Population growth and changing demographics are increasing demand for hospital-based care.
  • Care teams routinely adapt spaces and workflows to meet patient needs and maintain access to care.

These trends demonstrate the need for additional capacity, expanded services, and future-ready healthcare infrastructure.

The Maple Grove Hospital expansion has been years in the making and remains rooted in demonstrated community need.

“Expanding Maple Grove Hospital has been a critical part of our strategic plan for years because we have seen firsthand how quickly this community is growing and how demand for care is changing. Our services need to keep pace with that rapid growth, and our partnership with Sanford Health provides the resources to move this vision forward with confidence. This is an investment in our ability to meet the healthcare needs of this community for generations.”

Trevor Sawallish, CEO, North Memorial Health and president, Sanford Health Twin Cities region

These investments will help improve access to care while supporting future growth and evolving healthcare needs.

The Sanford Health partnership

The Maple Grove Hospital expansion is one of the first tangible examples of Sanford Health and North Memorial Health delivering on commitments made through the partnership. Sanford Health has committed approximately $500 million to advance North Memorial Health’s long-planned expansion, helping expand access to care and support the healthcare needs of growing Minnesota communities.

“The true measure of a health system partnership is the difference it makes for the people we serve. For patients and families in the northwest metro, this investment means greater access to the care they need, close to home. For clinicians and care teams, it means greater access to the resources, technology and specialized expertise they need to deliver exceptional care. And for Minnesota, it demonstrates what’s possible when we combine local leadership and clinical excellence with the strength of an integrated health system.”

Bill Gassen, President and CEO of Sanford Health
