North Memorial Health will begin offering breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography) on October 1, 2019.
Tomosynthesis looks at multiple slices throughout the breast so there is improved visualization of certain types of mammographic abnormalities. Studies are showing that the benefits compared with conventional digital mammography include a higher cancer detection rate and fewer patient recalls. While studies are underway to better define full benefits, tomosynthesis is believed to be especially effective for women with dense breasts.
