Welcome to North Memorial Health Family Birth Center – Robbinsdale Hospital. Parking vouchers are available for all Family Birth Center patients and their guests. Patients enter through the main hospital atrium entrance. The Family Birth Center is located on the west side on floor 3. Upon arrival, you’ll be admitted to the Labor and Delivery unit. You’ll stay in the same private room from labor and delivery to discharge. Our private, intimate and quiet rooms include: a personal breast pump, room service, and TV with education, guided imagery, movies, and on-demand music, as well as an individual bubble tub and shower, a personal robe, and a pull-out chair. We provide engaged OB/GYN hospitalist support on our unit 24/7. We have services and technology for the most complex births, including maternal-fetal medicine. Additionally, we offer various pain management techniques including: a variety of laboring positions, birthing balls, breathing techniques, epidurals, integrative therapy, nitrous oxide, and soaking tubs. We offer two operating rooms with one of the lowest C-Section rates in the state. A communal waiting room is available for your birth partner, as together, you await delivery. Or have them visit our Healing Garden for a breath of fresh air. Average length of stay: Vaginal Delivery: 24-40 hours; C-Section Delivery: Up to 3 days. Our nurses are specially trained to provide breastfeeding support. We’re excited to see you and be at your side.

Support during labor

While your primary obstetric provider and advance practice professionals will oversee your care and delivery, if needed, we have a team of OB/GYN hospitalists onsite 24/7 to offer additional support and consultation.

We offer labor support options to help with comfort during delivery. Depending on your care needs and preferences, support options may include movement, positioning and pain management during labor.

Our Family Birth Center supports a range of birth preferences while providing access to hospital-based maternity care throughout the process.

Families feel reassured knowing our Level I newborn nursery is supported around the clock by neonatal nurse practitioners and NICU-trained nurses who provide specialized care for newborns when needed.

Our team also helps families navigate the transition home with support, education and guidance during the postpartum stay.

What is an OB/GYN hospitalist, and how do they support my care?

Our OB/GYN hospitalists are experienced physicians who are onsite 24/7 to provide additional support during labor, delivery and postpartum care when needed. While your primary OB provider remains responsible for your care, OB/GYN hospitalists work alongside your care team, help manage urgent situations, coordinate care for higher-risk pregnancies and provide expert support to ensure the safest possible experience for you and your baby.

What happens after I give birth?

After your baby is born, you will continue your recovery and postpartum care in the same private room. This gives families time to rest, bond and get help, while allowing our care team to provide continuity of care. Staying in one room creates a comfortable environment where families can focus on recovery and their new baby.

What happens if my newborn needs extra support after delivery?

Our Level I newborn nursery in the Family Birth Center is supported 24/7 by our neonatal team inclusive of neonatal nurse practitioners and NICU-trained nurses who provide specialized care for newborns in need of higher-level support.
