We are pleased to announce the 2021 junior volunteer scholarship winners. The Gayle Stegeman Memorial Scholarship, the junior volunteer scholarship program at Maple Grove Hospital, was created in 2018 to honor the memory of our beloved gift shop manager, Gayle. Gayle was an inspiration to many throughout the hospital, both customers and team members.
The scholarship program at North Memorial Health Hospital was originally founded with a gift from the Hospital Auxiliary to support young adult volunteers. Though the Auxiliary is no longer active today, the legacy of their generosity lives on through the accomplishment of these exceptional volunteers.
Gayle Stegeman Memorial Scholarship Recipients - Maple Grove Hospital
“My experience at Maple Grove Hospital introduced me to the endless possibilities of how I could help others and provide some sort of comfort. This lesson is one that I will treasure all throughout my life, especially when I move forward with my career.”
“Through my experience as a lead volunteer and trainer, I also have experience directing and leading others. This will be invaluable to my future.”
“Many people talk about success in life being associated with wealth and promotions, but I’ve come to realize that success is more about the impact that you leave on others. Maple Grove Hospital has helped me realize that.”
Junior Volunteer Scholarship Recipients - North Memorial Health Hospital
“I checked N95 mask to ensure that they were not defective, made a poster for the doctors and the nurses who work at the hospital, and assembled COVID-19 kits. Although it was a unique experience, I admired volunteering during COVID because I was still able to safely perform the work.”
“Before I started to volunteer, I was known as a talker. This experience helped me understand that it’s also important to listen.”
“In a world that is constantly moving at a fast pace, we often forget to slow down and recognize the compassion and good-heartedness that we are able to show another human. What motivates me to volunteer is the smile that I can put on someone else’s face or the shred of brightness that I can add to anyone’s life.”
“I have gained incredible respect for all healthcare workers and have found meaning in realizing that being a part of the community is knowing that everybody’s story is different.”
“My volunteering experience at North Memorial has given me the opportunity to learn more about the medical industry and the hospital while being able to assist customers in various small, yet impactful, ways.”
