Our board-certified lactation consultants and specially trained nurses at North – Maple Grove Hospital provide evidence–based support to help you keep your baby full and healthy. We are available for both inpatient and outpatient appointments.

We are committed to respecting the best, evidence-based medicine for new babies and families, including robust breastfeeding support. We respect all kinds of feeding for all kinds of reasons, and we pour our energy into making sure you’re armed with all the information you need to keep your baby full and happy.

If you are facing lactation challenges or your baby is struggling to nurse, our lactation consultants are available for advice, instruction, and support.

Expert lactation support

  • All of our nurses have specialized education and training regarding lactation and healthy infant feeding, so they can support you and your family during your stay.
  • All of our outpatient lactation consultants are IBCLC-certified, which is an international certification standard requiring hundreds of hours of intensive training.
  • We have pasteurized donor human milk available for our inpatients during their hospital stay if supplemental feedings are needed during the breastfeeding journey.
  • You do not need to have delivered your baby at North – Maple Grove Hospital or be a current patient to use our lactation service. Check with your insurance provider for coverage.

Mommy & Me support group

Join us for a support group with other moms and babies to support one another on our feeding journeys. A lactation consultant will facilitate conversation, and a scale will be available to weigh your baby if desired.

Breastfeeding resources

La Leche League Leaders are experienced parents who have breastfed or chestfed their own babies and who have been trained and accredited by La Leche League International to help with breastfeeding. Attend a free meeting or call or email them for free advice.

Everyday Miracles’ works to improve birth outcomes and reduce health disparities by providing evidence–based education, compassionate and culturally aware support, and a non-judgmental, caring community. Clients have lower cesarean rates, higher breastfeeding initiation rates, and higher breastfeeding rates at 6 months.

Kelly Bonyata, a registered nurse and IBCLC, regularly reviews and updates this site, which is full of evidence–based information and resources. The search function works very well.

WIC supports breastfeeding mothers with extra food vouchers, in order to make the best milk for their babies, along with personal connections, counseling, and support for around-the-clock troubleshooting and guidance.

The Infant Risk Center offers information concerning the safety of medications and use during pregnancy and lactation. Call and speak with a professional who has access to the most current medication and breastmilk information. The acting executive director, Thomas Hale, Ph.D., R.Ph., is considered one of the foremost experts in perinatal pharmacology.

A wealth of helpful videos, from baby’s first latch to troubleshooting common breastfeeding issues. Plus, if you’re supporting a mother or baby who is breastfeeding, there’s lots of info for support and caregivers. Videos available in nearly 30 different languages, including Arabic, Hmong, Karen and Spanish.

The Minnesota Department of Health offers breastfeeding information in Somali under the Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) section.

This smartphone app offers evidence-based information in collaboration with Minnesota WIC, local Breastfeeding Coalitions, and other breastfeeding advocates.
