Each year, the number one cause of death in the United States is coronary artery disease. There are no symptoms or prior heart problems in many of these cases, which is why proactive screening matters. Numerous risk factors exist for heart disease, including cholesterol level, blood pressure, smoking, and family history.

However, research increasingly suggests that there is a direct link between the amount of calcium buildup in your arteries and the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke. CT calcium scoring uses high-resolution CT scanning technology to detect and highlight calcification. It is a simple, noninvasive test that can identify early heart disease, helping you and your physician understand your risk and plan next steps.

What Is CT Calcium Scoring?

CT calcium scoring uses a high‑resolution CT scanner to take dozens of cross-sectional photos of your heart. If calcium is detected in your coronary arteries, the volume and density is measured, and a score is assigned.

Why this exam is helpful:

  • Early detection: Can identify early heart disease.
  • Noninvasive: No needles or contrast required.
  • Fast and affordable: The exam takes less than 30 minutes and costs $99.
  • Actionable insights: The results of this test will help you and your physician develop a plan that is right for you.

Who Should Consider CT Calcium Scoring?

CT calcium scoring may be beneficial if you meet the age criteria and have one or more risk factors:

Age guidelines

  • Men: 35–70
  • Women: 40–70

Risk factors

  • Diabetes
  • Family history of heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Overweight
  • Smoking

If you’re unsure whether the test is right for you, consult your physician to determine if CT calcium scoring fits your prevention plan.

What to Expect During Your CT Calcium Scoring Test

Here’s what happens during the test:

  1. Preparation: EKG leads will be placed on your chest and then you will then lie down on the bed of the CT scanner.
  2. The Scan: Your heart rate will be monitored, and you will be asked to hold your breath for a short period of time while the scan takes place.
  3. Duration: The entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes, and no injections or invasive steps are required.
  4. Results: In about one week, you will receive a report in the mail explaining how you scored. You will be told how you fit into various age and risk profiles and whether you have any likelihood of obstructive artery disease.

CT Calcium Scoring Cost & How to Schedule
