Approach To Care

Dr. Van Wyk is a Clinical Psychologist specializing in the treatment of trauma, grief, PTSD, substance use, and dissociative disorders. His orientation and approach to therapy is holistic and relational, and he considers it a privilege to support people in reclaiming their lives, restoring connection, and fostering wellbeing.

Therapy begins with working together to develop safety and trust and then collaboratively identifying goals and opportunities for change. The therapeutic relationship offers an opportunity to observe, with compassion and curiosity, an individual’s patterns of thought and behavior, both conscious and unconscious, that may be contributing to a sense of stuckness or discontent. As understanding and awareness develop, opportunities emerge to process painful emotions, resolve traumatic histories, identify strengths and core values, connect more deeply with others, and live a more authentic, integrated life.

Dr. Van Wyk’s passion for trauma recovery work has led to an ongoing pursuit of training and education in how to support and optimize each person’s unique healing journey. His practice is specifically informed by Interpersonal Neurobiology, an interdisciplinary field that synthesizes the latest research findings from the study of mindfulness, neuroscience, attachment, and other disciplines to inform an understanding of both the person and the therapeutic process.
